Richardson JN, Private

Private JNN Richardson ran away from home to join the Army at age 16. He was a farrier with the 3rd Company Commissariat and Transport Corps. The portrait photo shows him wearing his medals; on the left is the Egypt Medal with the Clasp, “Saukin 1885” whilst on the right is the Khedives Bronze Star 1884-86. Private Richardson earned both whilst serving with Sir Garnet J Wolesley’s forces against Arabi Pasha. He handcrafted the silver boot which is a model of the type he would have worn whilst the stirrups are the actual ones he wore. Private Richardson’s brother, William, later became chairman of the Ashford and District Urban Council.
