Maisey FL, Staff Sergeant

Maisey FL, Staff Sergeant

These medals represent the 37 years of uniformed service given by Sergeant FL (Les) Maisey MSM (1921-91). Enlisting in 1928 at the tender age of 16, Les served through WW2 with the Gosters, then the East Yorkshire Regiment. In 1953 he transferred into the Intelligence Corps, finally leaving the Army on compulsory retirement in 1965.

He then became Mess Steward in the Intelligence Corps Warrant Officers’ and Sergeants’ Mess in Ashford, a post he held until reaching retirement age in 1977.

Not content with a quiet retirement, Les continued to support the Corps at Templar Barracks where his considerable acting talents as a role player during training exercises will long be remembered by those who either had to work with him to crack a problem or work against him in one of his many ‘enemy’ guises. Les was well liked and well respected, unselfish, dedicated and a real character.

His medals are, from left to right; The 1939-45 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal, War Medal, General Service Medal with Malaya Clasp, Long Service and Good Conduct Medal with Bar and the Meritorious Service Medal.
