Billie King's WAAF Uniform
Sergeant Joyce 'Billie' King was a Y-Service operator stationed at RAF Chicksands during the Second World War. She was one of many women selected from the women’s branches of the British Armed Forces including the Women’s Royal Naval Service, the Women’s Auxilary Air Force, and the Auxilary Territorial Service, who were involved in the interception of German radio signals. The logs the wireless operators kept were sent down daily to Bletchley Park to be deciphered.
Billie had a knack for drawing humorous cartoons depicting life at Chicksands and kept a scrapbook of photographs of all of the friends that she made whilst stationed there. These treasures can be found in the Military Intelligence Museum archive.
