Rutherford J, Major

Rutherford J, Major

John Rutherford TD was called up for National Service with the Intelligence Corps in 1956. On leaving, he transferred into the Territorial Army, remaining with the Corps and reaching the rank of Major before finally retiring in 1996 after a total of 38 years service.

He served in a range of posts including a tour with the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons based in The Hague.
John maintained his links with the Corps in retirement, becoming the Intelligence Corps Association Regional Secretary for the Midlands.

Before his death, John left instructions that his medals were to be donated to the museum. They are, left to right: General Service Medal with Cyprus Clasp, Territorial Decoration with two Bars and the Efficiency Decoration.
Alongside we have his miniature National Service Medal and a medal to commemorate his participation in the 30th Conference of the Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers, held in London in 1977.
