Hillinger W, Sergeant

Hillinger W, Sergeant

It was not uncommon for infantry soldiers to change regiment as a casualty replacement for combat diminished units, and W Hilliger certainly ‘travelled’ during his service.

He was GS-905760 Royal Fusiliers, with whom he gained a Meritorious Service Medal. He also served with the Royal Army Service Corps and the Royal Engineers.

His service entitled him to the 1915 Star which is inscribed ‘Intelligence Corps’. Although it is not certain, it is believed that Sergeant Hilliger was employed as an interpreter at this time. This medal is not held by the museum.

His Victory medal is inscribed 32099 Acting Sergeant W Hilliger Royal Army Medical Corps.
