Edward Stephenson trained as an Architect before being called up for National Service.
He enjoyed Army life so much he stayed on after his 2 years were completed. In 1965, Sergeant Stephenson was seconded to the Sarawak Constabulary, earning the British Empire Medal (BEM) for his service there.

His medals are, left to right: BEM, General Service Medal with Malaya Clasp and General Service Medal with Borneo Clasp.
