Emergency Ration

Here we have an emergency ration tin from June 1906. Tins like these were given to soldiers fighting in the Boer War. One half of the tin contains 4 ounces of pemmican, a type of preserved meat, whilst the other contains 4 ounces of cocoa. Eating this ration was a last resort. A solider could continue marching on for 36 hours after consuming it.
