Oddities

Pigeon Photographer

  • In 1903 an experiment was conducted to see if homing pigeons could carry a camera to photograph areas of ground.

  • The answer was both 'yes', and 'no'.

  • Yes - a pigeon is strong enough to carry a small camera without it adversely effecting its flight.

  • No - because a pigeon will fly where it wants to, and this will probably not be where the pigeon trainer wanted it to go.

  • It is possible but not practical.

  • Also, in times of conflict pigeons become targets as they are known to be used to carry messages.  Hungry soldiers and civilians can also limit their numbers!
